Doubtless the most historic example extant of this very rare medal.

Civil War Prisoner of War Veteran's Medal. Issued in very limited quantity, this example is serial numbered "197" and carries six hand engraved bars detailing the soldier's history while interned in Confederate prisons as follows: Libby, Virginia, 1863-64; Macon, Georgia, 1864; Savannah, Georgia, 1864; Charleston, South Carolina, 1864; Columbia, South Carolina, 1864-65; and Wilmington, North Carolina, 1865. Red, white, and blue silk ribbon, the central theme on the medal itself is a soldier wielding a club being attacked by dogs. Overall untouched, retaining 98% of the original gilt. A rare Civil War medal steeped in tragic history.
