Description
Civil War Period .45 Caliber Percussion Target or Sharpshooter's Rifle by Lefever & Ellis, Canandaigua, New York. 46¼" overall with 30" octagonal barrel that is 1½" across the flats. The barrel is drilled for a false muzzle that does not accompany it. Patent breech with clean out screw, back action lock, adjustable trigger. The hooded front sight has calibrations engraved on the barrel. The rear sight dovetail has been filled and the gun is fitted with an adjustable post with brass locking knob for a telescopic sight. The underside of the barrel, 3½" from the muzzle, is drilled for the attachment of a rest. Brass trigger guard and butt plate with an extension at the heel to fit the shoulder. Maker's mark in a single die stamp on the top flat of the barrel, bottom flat of the barrel marked B. Losey Cast/ Steel. The walnut stock is fine with nice age patina. All metal smooth and gray with no rust or pitting, very nice. Brass furniture with light age patina and a neatly done old solder repair to the trigger guard just behind the bow. Mechanically perfect, fine bore. A nice signed example characteristic of the rifles carried into service in 1861 and used throughout the war by Federal sharpshooters.Auction Info
