Description

Civil War or Earlier American 4/4 Violin Inscribed, "G. W. Derby/ Co. F 8th N. Y. Cav. 1861". Certainly one of the most unusual and charming inscribed Civil War artifacts we've handled. The violin was consigned by Derby's great grandson, who actually used the violin in the school orchestra in the 1940s. Derby, who's actual name was William H. preferred, according to his obituary, to be called G. W. (possibly referring back to his father's name) enlisted from Albion, N. Y. in Co. F, 8th New York Cavalry on Sept. 18, 1861. The regiment served in the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Army of the Potomac Cavalry Corps and was heavily engaged throughout its term of service losing 105 men killed and mortally wounded. At Gettysburg, as part of Gamble's Brigade of Buford's Division, the regiment opened the fight on the morning of the 1st, suffering forty casualties, including the loss of the regimental colonel. Derby was injured on Sept. 10, 1863 in a fall from his horse leaving him permanently disabled. Initially transferred to the 16th Co. 20th Battalion of the VRC he was discharged for disability on Aug. 5, 1864, surviving until 1915.

The violin is in fine condition with no maker's label. Made entirely of maple the back and side exhibit exquisite figured/curly grain. The ½" x 1 1/8" silver plaque is untouched with deep dark patina and is inlaid at the top of the back, edged with polished ebony. The violin displays nice rich patina overall. Original ebony string adjusting keys, the ebony finger board was replaced when it was used in the 1940s, but the original finger board still accompanies it. Also accompanied by the original ivory and mother of pearl mounted bow with bone adjusting knob, also in fine condition. A wonderful Civil War artifact with superb history.
