Civil War: New Jersey First Defender 1861 Medal and GAR Membership Medal Identified to Private Theodore Joline "the Drummer Boy of Bull Run", New Jersey 3rd Infantry.

Theodore Joline enlisted on April 27, 1861 as a Private and mustered into "F" Company, New Jersey 3rd Infantry. Records show he mustered out at Trenton, New Jersey on July 31, 1861 for unstated reasons. Though his obituary in the September 3, 1914 edition of the Asbury Park Press indicates that he served as the regiment's drummer boy at the first battle of Bull Run. The lot includes Joline's cased New Jersey First Defender medal with his name engraved on the reverse. The bronze planchet measures 43-mm and the eagle pendant bears a J. K. Davison's Sons, Philadelphia maker mark. The medal is housed in the original case of issue. Additionally, Joline's GAR membership badge is included. The medal is numbered V85659 on the rim.
