Description
Civil War: Loyal Legion Medal and Three Other Medals Identified to Brig. General Benjamin Curtis Lockwood.Includes: 1) Loyal Legion medal, 31 x 31 mm, gilt with enamel enhancements, numbered 7497 on the ring clasp, pinback. 2) GAR medal, 46 x 75 mm to the to pendant, marked B5862 on the rim. 3) Army of the Cumberland 1889 Chattanooga Reunion badge, planchet 32 mm in diameter. 4) Spanish-American War Masonic veterans' medal, 38 mm in diameter, pinback, engraved on the reverse "Presented to / B. C. Lockwood / Capt. Co. Infty. U.S.A. / Union Lodge of L. O. No. 3 / F. & A. M. / Detroit, Mich. / Dec. 27 1898".
Benjamin Curtis Lockwood enlisted as a private on October 2, 1861 at Camp Sigel, Kentucky. He mustered into "F" Company of the Kentucky 6th Infantry. He was discharged for disability on April 6, 1863. On September 30, 1864 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into "A" Company of the Kentucky 54th Infantry. He mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky on September 1, 1865. After the Civil War he steadily rose through the ranks and saw service in the Spanish-American War and the war in the Philippines. He retired a Brigadier General in 1907.
