Description
Civil War Frock Coat, Sash, Kepi and Cased Epaulettes identified to Surgeon William P. Morgan, 9th Maryland Infantry. Morgan was commissioned into the regiment as Assistant Surgeon on 7/29/63 and mustered out 2/24/64 to be commissioned as Surgeon at the U. S. General Hospital at Annapolis, Md. He finally mustered out of service on 5/25/65.The frock coat is double breasted with seven Canfield/Baltimore eagle staff buttons on each side. Body of very fine quality blue wool with raw cut skirt edge and excellent Civil War period sleeve cut. The coat has functioning slit cuffs with three small eagle staff buttons on each. Velvet lined 1 3/8" stand up collar with hook and eye for closure at the front. Double bullion border Major of infantry shoulder straps and small 'pocket' near the collar for attachment of epaulettes. Body lined with light brown polished cotton with quilted breast and single inside breast pocket. Skirt lined with darker brown polished cotton. White cotton sleeve lining. Coat overall in superb condition showing honest wear and just a few tiny, really negligible moth holes. Also a few very small seam openings, easily closed. Velvet collar lining shows honest wear/use. Double thickness green silk sash with 8 1/2" tassels with wooden core. Just a few very small spots of fading, else about mint. Fringed gold bullion epaulettes in the original japanned tin storage case. Double row of gold bullion fringe. Brass crescents retaining much of the original gilt. Small eagle staff buttons. Inside the brass crescent on each epaulette is a gold bullion circle with gold bullion numeral 9 on dark blue wool background. Also attached to each epaulette is a silver bullion 1st Lieutenant's bar, apparently Morgan's rank upon entering service as an Assistant Surgeon. Underside of the epaulettes with red Moroccan leather and red silk covered pads. Brass attachment tongues and hooks marked right and left. Overall excellent just showing honest use and some mothing on the wool background on the numerical insignia. Japanned tin container retains most of the original finish with a couple of dents but very sound. Chasseur style dark blue wool kepi stands 3 1/2" high at the front. Just a few tiny scattered moth nicks and one slightly larger area at back, but all very minor. 1/2" tarred leather chinstrap with some edge nicks but complete and sound. Brass adjusting buckle and small eagle staff side buttons. Tarred, bound leather visor with some worn areas on the face of the binding else perfect and very sound. Small gold bullion embroidered infantry horn with false embroidered gilt brass 9 in the center on black wool background. 1 1/2" maroon Moroccan leather sweat band excellent. Dark brown polished cotton lining about perfect. Heavy crown stiffener and embossed in silver on the inside of the crown, "Col. O' Lippincott/ Government Goods Depot/ 79 & 81 Randolph St./Chicago". First example by this dealer we've ever seen and a great kepi. Exceptional Civil War US officer's uniform for both history and condition.
