Description

Civil War Era 35-Star Guidon. 42" x 27.5" silk guidon. There are 35 hand-painted gold stars in the canton, arranged in two concentric circles with single stars at the corners. Based on the number of stars, it dates from June 20, 1863 to October 31, 1864. It was purchased from noted military dealer and historian Bill Guthman whose identification lapel is affixed to the back. According to Guthman, "Found in New Mexico with possible Indian War association. Conserved and mounted at the Textile Conservation Workshop." It is entirely hand-stitched with a foldover sleeve along the left side. There is some scattered loss and splits, in keeping with its age and the delicate nature of the silk material. The reds have bled. It is otherwise complete. It was been mounted on a cloth stretcher within a custom Lucite frame and is ready for display.
