Believed to be the product of Blaise Praedel & Bro., New Orleans.
Civil War Confederate Foot Officer's Sword. Although Praedel's swords are quite rare this example appears to conform to the criteria used to identify his work. 31½" blade with unstopped fuller that runs open all the way to the hilt with a distinctive curve near the tip. Blade generally smooth and gray with some scattered patches of light pitting, untouched. The classic M1850 pattern hilt is very well made but displays the distinctive two piece pommel cap with the seam slightly off center and at a bit of an angle. Smooth leather wrapped grip with twisted brass wire, shaped to fit the hand. Hilt/grip about perfect, the quillon just slightly bent. Hilt completely untouched/uncleaned with deep dark patina overall. Although the steel scabbard was very likely used with the sword during the war we believe it to be a period replacement and possibly of US manufacture. Deep dark patina and just one patch of light pitting. Very minor seam opening just above the lower mount. Rather crude cast decoration on the ring mounts and equally crude engraved/rolled decoration on the middle and lower mounts. The lower mount has been pushed up on the scabbard, is split at the top, and exhibits a number of shallow dents. Nice representative example of a sword by a very rare Confederate maker.Auction Info
