Description

Civil War and Earlier Naval Ensign. Possessing great character, this wonderful handsewn flag dates from the Civil War to perhaps as early as the 1840s. Handsewn of wool bunting, it measures 60" at the hoist and 92" at the fly, with thirteen white cotton stars arrayed in its 33" x 53" canton. Each star measures approximately 5" from point to point. A simple one inch cotton reinforcement runs the length of the hoist with its original rope still intact. The banner shows genuine age and wear and has been backed with a matrix to better preserve it. As would be expected in such a utilitarian item, there is some loss of material in the body, with a larger hole between some stars in the canton that does not detract from the ensign's historic appearance. A difficult to find flag.
