Cased Colt Model 1862 Police .36 Caliber Percussion Pistol Inscribed to Captain Wm G. Steel Co. K 20th Penna Militia.Pistol in very good condition, matching serial # 12366, 4 ½" barrel generally smooth and gray, mixing with 30% blue and case colors. Excellent markings, mechanically perfect. Grips excellent with 90% varnish. Grip straps / trigger guard retain 70% of the original silver finish. Back strap inscribed in block letters "Wm. G. Steel. Capt. 20th Regt. P.V. Sept 12, 1862" and "Antietam" on the butt. Walnut case lined in purple velvet excellent with minor dents and scratches. Eagle pistol flask with nice mellow patina, one small shallow dent, blued spring. Blued steel double cavity mold marked "Colts Patent", "36 P", tin of Eley London percussion caps and an unopened packet of Hazards combustible cartridges made for Colts New Model Police pistol.
The 20th Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia was organized Sept 18, 1862 in response to Pa Governor Curtains call for 50,000 Militia troops to defend the state from the Confederate advance after 2nd Bull Run. The 20th Pa was held in reserve in close proximity to Antietam and mustered out Sept 30, 1862. An attractive untouched cased set in very nice condition.
