Description

Beautiful Fully Trimmed Pattern 1851 Shako. This stunning example of the very rare 1851 shako has all the original embellishments of a militia artillery unit. Standing a full 6" tall overall, the blue-black wool body is sound with only a few minor moth holes. Around the base, as per regulations, is a red wool band designating a regiment of artillery, rising from 2" in the back to a 3½" peak in front. A braided red cord hangs from the top by two brass eagle "A" buttons and rests on the shako's back. On the front, a small silver letter "A" is affixed at the top of the peak over a set of early stamped brass "crossed cannon" artillery insignia. At the top is a 9" tall red wool plume and brass holder with a patriotic spread winged "eagle" device, held to the shako by means of whalebone shaft. The original visor is intact although the buttons and chinstrap may possibly be replacements. The 2" wide sweatband of thin glazed leather is complete but has become detached from the interior. There is no body lining but the light blue silk lining remains in the crown with the gold maker's stamp "A. W. POLLARD/ 6 Court Street/ Boston/ Mass" clearly visible. A very attractive and scarce item of headgear.
