Description

Beautiful Confederate All Silk Eleven Star 1st National Flag with Fonda Thomsen Analysis Report. Superb condition and actually discovered many years ago by the consignor's father in an antique shop in Connecticut, in the bottom of a trunk full of fur pelts. Ms. Thomsen states in her report that "This flag is one of the most intact and honest First National silk flags I have examined. It is of museum quality lacking only a documented history." The flag is entirely hand sewn with an average of 8 stitches to the inch, and constructed of a single layer of plain woven silk. 53.5" on the hoist and 82" on the fly. The 33.5" X 24.75" blue silk canton contains eleven, five pointed, white silk stars, appliqued to each side. Ten of the stars measure an average of 4 1/2" point to point, and are arranged in a 24" diameter circle. The eleventh star, in the center of the circle, measures 8 3/4" point to point. The method of the flag's attachment is unique in Ms. Thomsen's experience, with the leading edge of the flag consisting of a cut edge with 1/4" of the fabric folded to the obverse and not held in place with stitching, only a crease. There are nine pairs of tack holes running vertically with the first row on the folded edge, with each of those having a complimentary hole 4 1/4" toward the fly, indicating the method of attachment was to wrap the leading edge around a staff, then fix it in place with the corresponding vertical row of tacks. The flag is intact, as constructed with absolutely no alterations or additions. Some minor fading, and a couple of small spots with open stitching, but overall in really superb untouched condition.

Documented First National silk flags, with eleven stars in the canton, arranged in a similar pattern, exist but were not common. The eleven star pattern was in use from July 2, 1861 to November 1861. Documented flags which have the eleventh star in the center, often larger to honor the local state, were especially popular in Texas. As per Ms. Thomsen's statement, a rare opportunity to obtain one of the finest silk Confederate First National flags extant.
