April 10th, 1861 - The colonel of the 1st South Carolina Rifles, James Johnston Pettigrew, secures ammunition as the war is ready to begin - Pettigrew would go on to lead Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and be killed in that campaign.Pettigrew was the Colonel of the Pt S.C. Rifles. In this document dated "Sullivan's Island, April 10th, 1861", Pettigrew approves 9,000 rounds of cartridges for the rifles "taken from the late U.S. Arsenal" the document is filled out by the Quartermaster of the Rifles regiment. Pettigrew signs the document "Approved, J. Johnston Pettigrew, Col. Reg. Rifles Commanding".
Pettigrew's signature is listed as "a rare signature" in Autographs of the Confederacy... and of course, it was Pettigrew who led Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. A large autograph, measuring 4" long. From the Calvin Packard Civil War Battlefield Letter Collection.
