Description
Appomattox Parole for General Walter H. Stevens. One partially printed page, 7.75" x 3.25", Appomattox Court House, Virginia; April 10, 1865. A pass signed by Walter H. Taylor, by command of General Lee, stating "Brig Gen W H Stevens Chief of Engineers, of ANV, a Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission to go to his home, and there remain undisturbed." On verso is docketing by General E. O. C. Ord, which acknowledges Stevens' transport to his home in Baltimore; this has been signed by Ord's adjutant, Captain Hugh G. Brown. Appomattox paroles are the most desirable of all Civil War paroles; this is the first we have handled for a general.Accompanied by a carte de visite of General Stevens and General Orders No. 43 and 50. General Order 50, dated July 20, 1864, appoints Stevens as Chief Engineer of the Army of Northern Virginia. General Order 43, dated April 11, 1865, states that officers and enlisted men of the Army of Northern Virginia must carry a printed certificate from Appomattox Court House in order to be identified as a paroled prisoner.
Walter Husted Stevens, a West Point graduate, served as Chief Engineer under Robert E. Lee. When the Civil War began, he was immediately made a major, and was later promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1862. During the Siege of Petersburg, he aided in strengthening the city's defenses against the Union attacks, and speculation states that Stevens was the last uniformed man across the Mayo Bridge as the city of Richmond was being evacuated. After the war, he became the superintendent of railroads in Mexico, but died two years later after contracting yellow fever.
Condition: Parole certificate has flattened folds, with light spots of soiling throughout and on verso; with uneven margins. The CDV is lightly toned with some creasing and cracks. The general orders are very good to fair; one is toned with dampstaining, spots of soiling, and chipping at the edge, while the other order is in good condition, and has been backed with another sheet of paper for reinforcement.
