Description
Abraham Lincoln Signed Civil War Commission for U. S. Marine Officer. Archivally matted and framed with the sight view being 14 1/4" X 18". Standard format for Naval/Marine commissions with small eagle masthead with sailing ships at top, and large mythical nautical scene including Neptune surmounting panoply of flags with anchor and naval cannon at bottom. Document commissions William B. Remey Jr. as 2d Lieutenant in the U. S. Marines, with rank dating to 26 November 1861 and the actual date of the document being April 1, 1862. Bright crisp signatures of Abraham Lincoln and Gideon Welles. Overall condition is about perfect with the exception of just one small hole at upper left not affecting text or signatures and really negligible with respect to the value and desirability of the document.Remey's Marine Corps service was both lengthy and important. He was initially assigned to the U. S, Frigate Sabine. His service subsequent to the Civil War was of considerable note. In 1878, Col. William Butler Remey was able to convince Congress that the Navy Department needed a permanent uniformed Judge Advocate General, and that Naval law was so unique that it would be best to appoint a line officer from the U. S. Navy or Marines to the post. The bill to create the billet of Judge Advocate General of the Navy was signed into law in 1880, and Col Remey assigned to the post. A position he held until his retirement in 1892.
A beautiful Civil War Lincoln document with the added interest of the historical significance of the officer receiving the appointment.
