Description
About Mint Veteran Reserve Corps Uniform Jacket. U.S. Army regulations stated the Veteran Reserve Corps would be issued a jacket "of sky-blue kersey, with dark-blue trimmings, cut like the jacket of the U.S. Cavalry, to come well down on the loins and abdomen." This is an almost perfect example of that scarce and attractive jacket, manufactured at Philadelphia's Schuylkill Arsenal. The sky blue kersey body has a 2" tall stand-up collar and is piped throughout with ½" wide, deep blue herringbone tape on the collar, cuffs, edge and front of the jacket. Each side is cut with a small, stylish vent at the bottom and on each shoulder is a dark-blue-piped kersey shoulder strap fastened by a small button. Eleven of the original twelve buttons on the front remain intact (the detached button is with the coat) as do the buttons at the collar. The piece was made without buttons on the cuff. The body is lined with heavy white cotton and the sleeves with lighter white material. In one sleeve is clearly stamped a size number "2" above an "SA" for Schuylkill Arsenal, and in the other sleeve an inspector's mark "13." Both sleeves also have two ½" "dots" stamped there during the manufacture process. Condition is outstanding with only two or three very tiny moth nips. Created in April 1863, the Veteran Reserve Corps performed a variety of duties at government installations and fixed posts and were an omnipresent part of the Union Army in the war's last years. A very eye appealing and difficult to obtain uniform in superlative condition.Auction Info
