Description
[Nathan Bedford Forrest] Five Civil War Documents.(1) George B. Dibrell, Confederate brigadier general, served with Nathan Bedford Forrest at Stone's River. This 7.625" x 9.625" single-page letter from Dibrell to the widow of Forrest is on House of Representatives letterhead from Washington, D.C., November 1, 1877. Dibrell eulogizes the late Forrest and includes the sentiment, "Permit me, madam, to express to you the sympathy of a friend and follower of your gallant husband and to assure you that we all deeply mourn his loss and regard it as a great loss to the Country..." Folds and light soiling are present. (2) Measuring 9.125" x 4.25", this telegram sent to Colonel Edmundsen of the 11th Tennessee Cavalry was from General W.H. Mackall from Russellville, Alabama on May 11th, 1863. In the note, Edmundsen is ordered to report with his regiment to Bear Creek. Dibrell added a penciled message at the bottom of the note reading, "...If Gen. Forrest has gotten up please notify him that the enemy has gone back and was in my opinion only sent out to cut me off. Yours truly- G.G. Dibrell, Gen." Light toning and some folds are visible, with a small hole at the right of the center. (3) A brilliant cavalry officer, Confederate Major General Joseph Wheeler ("Fighting Joe") raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga. This approximately 5.5" x 6.875" letter, 4 pp. 8vo., is dated September 24, 1904 from New York and was written by Wheeler to the grandson of Forrest. Part of the letter reads, "I thank you very much for sending me a copy of the life of your very distinguished grand-father...[I have] the work by Gen. Jordan and Col. Pryor...[I] enclose a check which might add a mite to the Forrest monument fund." Damp spots are present and only slightly blur a few words of text. (4) This 3pp. manuscript is a tribute memorializing Forrest, written by his Fraternal Brothers of Gayoso I.O.O.F. in Memphis, Tennessee, October 31, 1877. An excerpt from the note reads, "As a soldier Gen. Forrest was among the most imminent of the present age, as a private in odd fellowship, he was faithful in the practice of a sublime teaching, whilst he was firm and decided in his opinions. That in the death of patriarch Gen. N.B. Forrest our country has lost a noble spirit, our community an honest and upright man...[and] our beloved order an exemplary and trustworthy member..." Possible singe marks are present and some folds and light aging are visible. (5) From Murfreesboro, Tennessee, November 18, 1862, this 9" x 8.25" letter is addressed to Brigadier General Forrest, "consent[ing] for certain companies to be returned [in] a few days." Signatures appear to include "Brig. Genl Wharton." Some light toning and foxing is present, with folds throughout and a minor tear at the left edge. Overall, these documents are in lovely condition and make a nice grouping. The B.G. Chip Newman Collection
