Description
'Floating CS' Confederate Staff Officer's Sword By Leech & Rigdon, Memphis Named to Captain W.T. Powers 5th Kentucky Infantry 30 1/2" slightly curved blade with unstopped fuller that extends to within 1/2" of the guard and 10" of the tip. Blade really excellent, generally bright and clean with just some scattered dark gray patina. Engraved on the reverse in bold script "Captain W. T. Powers". Classic form hilt with large "C S" between the two outboard branches and some cast decoration on the face projection from the inboard that attaches to the guard and the top of the quillon. Very narrow slit for sword knot at the top of the guard, the pommel plain with the exception of the cast line around the top. There are also cast lines of decoration around the edges on the inside face of the guard. Turned down counterguard on the reverse and distinctive iron rivet where the knucklebow enters and attaches to the pommel cap. Black leather grip excellent, twisted brass wire tight and complete.W.T. Powers enlisted on 1/7/1862 at Savannah,TN as a 1st Lieutenant and was commissioned into "F" Co. KY 9th on 1/7/1862. He was transferred out on 4/14/1862 and into "B" Co. TN 23rd Light Artillery.
