Description
[Civil War]. Lieutenant Charles B. Randolph Archive comprised of two swords, red officer's sash, spurs, two war-dated diaries, and over eighty individual commissions, company reports, letters, and orders, the bulk of which are war-dated.Charles B. Randolph enlisted in the Union Army as a second lieutenant in Company "C," 19th New York Volunteers, at Elmira, New York, April 1861. In December of that year, the regiment became the 3rd New York Artillery. The young officer was promoted to first lieutenant in February 1862 and mustered out in July 1863. Less than five months later, Randolph was mustered into Company "A," 148th New York Infantry, as a private. In May 1864, he was promoted to sergeant, but was captured six weeks later. Placed in a Confederate prison camp, he was eventually exchanged on April 1, 1865. Shortly after his release, he was commissioned a captain in the 118th United States Colored Troops and served in this capacity until mustering out in February 1866.
Of note is the Officer's Presentation Cavalry Saber, with 34.75" blade, profusely etched for 2/3 its length. The obverse with extensive floral scrollwork a 5.5" scene of cavalry battling infantry troops, the cavalry saddle blankets clearly marked "US". Spine etched for 10" of its length with scrollwork. Reverse etched with panoplies of arms, block "U.S.", scrollwork, a cavalry bugler and fallen cavalryman. Etched forward the ricasso "SCHUYLER HARTLEY & GRAHAM N.Y." Blade exhibits original luster mixed with gray and minor dark staining. Hilt perfect with nice dark patina. Cast decorative leaf and scrollwork on the two outer branches, pommel, face of the pommel and complete inner guard. Sharkskin grip with wire wrap excellent. Steel scabbard with brass scroll engraved mounts, cast ring mounts with leaf motif. Reverse center mount engraved in panel "Presented To Lieut.C.B. Randolph by the members of Battery C 3rd N.Y.V. Artillery July 29 1862". Scabbard is smooth and gray, no dents. The Original Letter of Presentation, undated [circa August 12, 1862], is included and reads, in full as written: "Lieut Randolph On behalf of this comp I have the pleasure of presenting you with this sabre for you Esteem and regard as an officer an soldier Acept the sabre Lieut and with it the best wishes of this company [3rd NY Artillery]." A small, framed oval photograph (which is included in the archive) measuring approximately 2.75" x 3.5" shows Capt. Randolph, in uniform, holding this sword in his left hand.
Also: Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword with a 30.5" plain blade, smooth and gray with minor edge nicks. Standard hilt with nicely toned brass. Leather grip with twisted wire wrap excellent. No scabbard. [and:] Officer's Red Silk Sash in excellent condition and a Pair of Brass Spurs with original leather straps. One spur has an old repair which has re-broken. Bronze medal marked "ET" at the top and "100% Duty" in the center.
With Two War-Dated Diaries kept by Randolph and one small Photograph Album. The first diary dates from 1862, while Randolph was a lieutenant in Battery "C," 3rd New York Artillery, and includes news of the scuttling of the "Merrimak [CSS Virginia]" two days earlier. The second, from his time as captain of the 118th USCT dates from 1865, includes news of his release from a Confederate POW camp, word of the "glorious news that Richmond had fallen," and "the sad news that the President and Wm H Seward . . . have been assasinated [sic] in Washington." "It seems that the President was at the theater," he continues, "it don't seem posable [sic] but then it may be I hope not." The photograph album measures 3.5" x 4.25"and contains eleven photographs and engraved portraits, including several of Capt. Randolph, both in uniform and in civilian dress, and one of Randolph with his young bride.
