Description

[Civil War]. Archive of War-Dated Forms. Approximately 40 subsistence documents, mainly from the papers of George Purcell. Purcell enlisted in 1862 as a Private and was soon promoted to Quarter Master Sergeant. As part of the Quartermaster's Department, Purcell had the role of procuring and distributing clothing, food, and other supplies to the army as well as providing them with adequate shelter. The department's distributions required a great deal of supervision so that soldiers were properly fed and clothed, with the least amount of shortages.

This archive's documents are all from the Civil War period and include forms such as Quarterly Returns of Ordinances and Ordinance Stores, lists of Clothing Camp & Garrison Equipage, Inventory and Inspection Reports of Subsistence Stores, records of provisions for hospitals, and various invoices.

Condition: Light toning throughout most documents, but the majority have been kept in very good condition. Some separations have occurred on papers where mail folds have weakened the paper.
