Description
Armor: Large Antique Indo-Persian Islamic Steel Shield Dhal Separ and Bazuband, Eighteenth Century. The shield, of circular convex form, has eight panels of chiseled decoration depicting horsemen and battle scenes. The center is decorated with a star in gold koftgari surrounded by eight additional horsemen and set with four domed bosses. The shield has a border of calligraphic Arabic script and an edge with an applied brass band. It measures 20.5" in diameter. The Persian arm guard, the bazuband, is of solid wootz steel with dramatically hand-chiseled lobed cartouches containing mounted huntsmen and animals. The lobes are surrounded with arabesque borders of gold koftgari. The bazuband has two back panels with the same decoration affixed by chain mail of rounded links and remnants of the interior padding. Also retained are the original buckles and square strap mounts. It has an overall length of 15.75". A few broken or missing links on the bazuband and a near unnoticeable repair to the center of the dhal separ. Light surface rust, else, very good.
