Description
Saddle Identified to Rhode Island Cavalry Officer.Brown leather saddle with embossed floral design on the seat and brass fittings. Complete with cylindrical leather saddle roll and two thin straps. The side of the saddle, beneath the side seat flap, has a stenciled label inscribed: "N. Atwood Co. C 1st Reg. R. I. Cav." Nathan Atwood mustered in on October 15, 1861 and mustered out on August 3, 1865. He was taken prisoner at Middleburg, Virginia on June 18, 1863 and paroled. The items, especially the saddle, display some verdigris and spots of mildew, all of which will easily clean off. Atwood was promoted to sergeant on July 15, 1862.
