Description

Rare 35th New Jersey "Cladek Zouaves" Jacket, Vest and Fez,
Worn by Private Alfred T. Brophy of Company K. Private Brophy enlisted August 31, 1864 and served until May 30, 1865 when he mustered out at Washington, DC. The regiment, recruited mainly in the counties of Essex and Hunterdon, was mustered into service at Flemington in September 1863 and was named after it's commander John J. Cladek. This is a fine example of the 35th New Jersey jacket, vest, and fez manufactured and contract marked by James Boylan, who along with his brother John were well known suppliers of uniforms to the Union Army during the Civil War. This set was loaned to the State of New Jersey for their 150th Civil War display at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum in Morristown, NJ. The book Gone For a Soldier: Jerseymen in the Civil War by Ryan C. Hyman and C. Paul Loane documented the full display.
