Description

Outstanding Confederate Officers' Infantry Chasseur Cap by Baltimore Maker Kershner.

This attractive and rare kepi displays the work of a skilled hatter from a city known to have deep Southern sympathies. The slightly rough blue-gray wool body is in excellent condition and has a finer black wool band around the base. The crown is medium blue wool or felt trimmed in quatrefoil with a flat, narrow gold band. There are indications that a wider gold band might have also been sewn around the border and the original unbound visor may have been reattached. No chinstrap or side buttons remain. The interior retains its full brown leather sweatband and almost all of the brown polished cotton lining is present although more frayed towards the front. Visible in the glazed crown of the cap is an impressed design bearing the maker's name "KERSHNER" below which is "Baltimore." The cap is similar to many examples known to have been worn by Confederate officers.

Condition: Overall condition of this colorful and historic piece of headwear is very fine.
