Description
Most Rare Civil War M1859 U.S. Marine Corps Undress Coat. The Marine Corps never fielded more than 400 officers and men during the course of the war and by war's end quickly shrank to no more than a token force. This is believed to be one of only five examples of this uniform coat extant, either privately held or in institutions. This was the pattern coat designed for field / combat duty. This example is in superb condition and quite possible the finest known. The coat follows the 1859 Regulations precisely, with a single breasted seven button front, two buttons at the rear waist (one missing), collar trimmed with red seam welt along the bottom edge only, unpadded body, no pockets in tails and short skirts reaching only "from the top of hip to crotch of the trousers. Collar handing loop present with hook and eye at throat. Brown polished cotton interior lining panels with white cotton sleeve linings. There are no markings present. The coated has been cleaned and some minor restitching on the interior panels executed by a professional restorer, else the coat is 'as found'. Small moth hole on lower left breast, else the blue wool body is about perfect. Seven matching Scovill marked USMC buttons on the front, Tice MC218A9. One of two buttons remaining at rear waist and one button on cuff also Tice MC218 with Scovill backmarks. This pattern coat is shown in numerous wartime photographic images, including the obsequious image of Marines on board the U.S.S. Kearsarge. See also Osprey volume "American Civil War Marines 1861 - 1865" by Field and Hook. U.S. Marines saw action throughout the war, from Bull Run to Ft. Fisher, and it was a marine detachment, doubtless wearing this exact pattern coat that captured John Brown at Harper's Ferry in 1859.
