Description

Magnificent, Identified Civil War US Officer's M1858 Hardee Dress Hat. The hat was used by Brevet Brigadier general Samuel Morton Zulick, 29th Pennsylvania Infantry. Zulick enlisted in the 29th as a Captain on 7/8/61, was promoted to Major 3/2/63, Lt. Colonel 5/1/63 and Colonel commanding the regiment 3/25/65. His brevet commission to Brigadier General dated to 3/13/65 for "bravery and efficiency as an officer". The 29th Pennsylvania, along with Zulick, was engaged in every major action of the Army of the Potomac including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Sherman's 'March to the sea'.

The hat itself is about mint. Fine quality black wool felt with 1/4" black silk edge binding. The brim of the hat lies flat at the front and back, but is turned up 3/8" at both sides. Officer's woven bullion and black hat cord with acorn tassels. Gold bullion embroidered officer's infantry horn insignia on black velvet background with infantry horn, 29 in center and coiled wire border on the front, perfect. Gold bullion embroidered spread wing eagle on black velvet background with coiled brass wire border on the turned up side, also perfect. Original black ostrich feather plume. Black oil cloth 2 1/4" sweatband with some minor surface crazing else perfect. Lined with maroon paper textured to look like cloth, also about perfect. Maker's name "L. Rickseker / Mount Joy / Pa." (near Lancaster, Pa.) embossed in the crown. The hat is stored in a green paper covered wooden and heavy paste board box with green pasteboard lid. The box exhibits a label on the side for women's shoes. The top of the lid with Adam's Express Co. label and address label to "Miss Brenda Hiestand, York, Pa" who was Zulick's niece. Doubtless the finest example of this very rare Civil War officer's hat we've ever cataloged with superb ID.
