Frock Coat Attributed to Elisha Hunt Rhodes, 2nd Rhode Island Infantry
Civil War Union Officers' Frock Coat Attributed to Lt. Colonel Elisha Hunt Rhodes, 2nd Rhode Island Infantry. A superb example featuring quality blue wool with polished cotton lining, quilted in the upper body with draped skirt. Great period sleeve cut, 8 ½-inch elbows tapering to a 4-inch cuff, raw cut skirt edge. White cotton sleeve lining, brown polished cotton breast pocket and tail pocket lining. 1 ¼-inch black velvet lined standup collar. Double breasted seven button front with all of the original Tiffany & Co. infantry buttons. Two W. G. Mintzer infantry buttons on top of the rear pleats, and one Evans and one Tiffany on the bottom pleats. Closed cuffs with all of the original infantry cuff buttons with mostly Tiffany backmarks. Original colonel of infantry shoulder straps, 1 ¾-inches wide, with very heavy double bullion and gilt wire borders, silver bullion oak leaf, light-blue velvet background.Verbal provenance and an old typed label reading "UNIFORM OF ELISHA N. [sic] RHODES / LT. COLONEL / 2ND RHODE ISLAND INFANTRY", attribute this excellent example to Elisha Hunt Rhodes (1842-1917). Rhodes enlisted as a corporal June 5, 1861 and mustered into D Company of the 2nd Rhode Island. He steadily rose in rank during the war breveted as a Lt. Col. in April of 1865. He mustered out July 13, 1865 at Hall's Hill, Virginia. After the war he was heavily involved in the GAR, and served as the Commander of the Rhode Island militia from 18779-1893. Excerpts from Rhodes' diary were extensively used in Ken Burns' excellent documentary The Civil War.
Condition: Very good. Scattered areas of small moth holes; some splits and tears in the lining; otherwise the frock coat shows honest wear at the neck, cuffs and edge of the tail.
