Description

Civil War Union Major Generals' Frock Coat, Sword Belt and Militia Belt Plate. Comprising: 1.) General grade officer's frock coat. Two rows of nine staff officer buttons grouped in rows of three. The buttons are back-marked "Waterbury Button Co.". The velvet collar stands 1 ¾-inches tall. The owner of this coat had very short arms and as such there isn't the typical flared elbow narrowing to the cuff as seen on most regulation frock coats. The 3 ¼-inch wide velvet cuffs are complete with three smaller staff officers' buttons (one is detached but still with the jacket). Raw cut skirt. The coat is lacking the body and sleeve lining. A beautiful, matched pair of single-border, bullion major generals' shoulder straps are sewn to the coat. General grade frock coats are rare and this example is certainly worthy of some professional restoration. 2.) Black leather sword belt and brass militia officer's belt plate complete with sword hanger straps.

Condition: 1.) Fair to good. Scattered moth holes, with some fraying and small tears. No lining as mentioned. A few tender seams. Right shoulder strap coming unsewn. 2.) Very good.
