Description

Civil War St. Louis Arsenal Mounted Artillery Shell Jacket. Blue wool fully trimmed in scarlet wool tape. 2 ½-inch high collar, 11 general service button front. One of two cuff buttons remain on each cuff. Lined in red plaid cloth lining to body; blue plaid cloth lining in the sleeves. Both bolsters remain on the back.

A very rare example of the shell jacket pattern that was only produced at the St. Louis Arsenal. The main difference between the St. Louis produced jackets and others is the manner in which the collar trim is applied. Rather than having a double row of trim around each false button hole, there is only a single application. This variation is also seen on the St. Louis produced Cavalry shell Jackets. This particular example also has a patterned lining that is very reminiscent of the jackets produced at Schuylkill Arsenal.

Condition: Very good. Shoulder seams a bit loose in spots; some splitting to lining seams, otherwise a handsome example.
