Description
Civil War Regulation Brigadier General's Frock Coat, with period ID to Brig. Gen. Henry Morris Naglee. Exceptional quality blue wool body with 1 7/8" high velvet collar. Top of sleeve at shoulder with 'puckering', elbow measures 8 1/4" and tapers to 5 1/2" at the cuff. The exterior of the right breast has an old 1/2" X 1/2" professional repair. The front skirt has three small repairs on the right side and several on the left side all in a 4" X 5" area. All repairs clearly professionally done and detract little if nothing from the coats' appearance and value. The back of the coat is excellent with just two tiny holes, deep tail pockets lined with brown polished cotton. The interior has a breast pocket lined with brown polished cotton with the breasts quilted. Draped back and skirt lining of black polished cotton. Lining with a few scattered spots of damage but minor and easily restored. Perfect white cotton sleeve lining. The coat retains all of the original eagle staff buttons with "Horstmann Bros. & Co. Phil." backmarks. Set in groups of two on the double breasted front. The black cotton hanging loop is lined with shite cotton with period ink script ID "H. M. Naglee".Naglee served in the Mexican War in California as a Captain in the 1st New York Infantry. He re-entered the army in 1861 as a Lt. Col. in the 16th US Infantry and was commissioned Brigadier General in February 1862. He commanded a brigade in The Peninsula Campaign and was wounded at Fair Oaks. Naglee commanded the VII Army Corps in 1863 and mustered out 4/4/64, returning to California. A beautiful Civil War general's frock coat with impeccable ID.
