Description

Texas Ranger Badge, circa 1919. Measuring 2.25" in diameter, this genuine nickel-plated, pin-back badge reads "Texas Ranger" around the upper and lower edges. In the middle of the star is hand stamped "Co. F."

Badges such as these were not carried by Rangers until the last decades of the 19th century, though photographs exist showing Rangers wearing badges as early as the 1870s. In lieu of badges, Rangers carried Warrants of Authority and Descriptive Lists issued to them by the state adjutant general. Early badges were created by each individual Ranger, often made by jewelers who cut the badges from Mexican coins. The earliest authenticated Ranger badge dates from 1889.
