Description

Russian Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd Class, Commander Cross. 51mm x 51mm. Yellow gold Maltese-style cross with delicately detailed Russian two-headed eagles alternating between the arms of the cross. A beautifully enameled central device features the intertwined "S" design of St. Stanislaus within a wreath. The reverse of the cross is unadorned except for an identical St. Stanislaus device sans wreath. The medal bears the hallmark "BA" and an unknown Russian name in Cyrillic letters. The medal is complete with ribbon and exhibits wear commensurate with modest use. The award was first instituted in 1765 by Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski, last king of Poland prior to the partition. The order ranked second only to the White Eagle.
As a Russian Order, double-headed Imperial eagles replaced the Polish eagles between the cross arms.
