Description
Imperial German Hessian Spiked Helmet.Measuring 10-inches tall with a polished skull and visors. All trim and mountings are silver. The Hessian rampant lion front plate is affixed to the helmet via two threaded posts and retaining nuts. There are two extra holes, more accurately slits, in the front though it appears the front plate has been on a very long time. The slightly convex silver chin scales are held by silver rosettes and retain officers' "Reichs" and Hesse cockades. The silver round spike base is held to the helmet with four domed-head retainers and supports a 4 ¾-inch non-fluted spike. The silver spine runs from the edge of the spike base to the edge of the rear visor. The helmet has an officers' style 2-inch leather sweatband and split-silk lining. The underside of the front visor is lined with green morocco leather; the rear visor lined with red morocco. There is some old, illegible writing on the inside which begins "Hesse..." which may offer some clues on the origins of this helmet.
Condition: Very good. Some light scattered scratches and a couple of trivial abrasions. From the collection of J.T. Hamrick, M.D.
