Description
Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach Grand Duke of Saxony 5th Thuringian, Infantry Regiment No. 94 Officers' Spiked Helmet. A handsome helmet measuring approximately 9 ½-inches tall. Leather with gilt trim. 4 ¼-inch tall spike on a round base with four star-head retainers. Gilded-brass spine running the length of the back of the helmet. Front plate mounted with threaded posts, washers, and small, square retaining nuts. The front plate holes appear to have been slightly enlarged. Gilded-brass, flat chinscales with plain rosettes. Both cockades present. 2-inch leather sweatband and silk head lining. M. Neumann retailers' paper label mounted on the inside of the helmet dated 1905 and marked size 58. Front visor underside trimmed in green; back visor underside trimmed in red. Several German names, almost graffiti really appear written on the leather sweatband and silk head lining.Condition: Very good. With the usual light crazing to the surface on the leather, more so on the visors. The base threaded posts lack the washers. From the collection of J. T. Hamrick, M.D.
