Rare and Scarce Venetian Morion Cabasset.

Approximately 12-inches tall. The helmet of traditional form, dome-shaped with crested pattern. Roped pattern borders to brim. Etched and gilded with an etching of the Minoan Minotaur [symbol of strength and power] on both sides of the bowl; and with beautiful acanthous etching and gilding at its base. Helmet is complete with intricate and fancy bordered but spaced rivets and rosettes. According to consignor notes; a Venetian armory rack number inside; he also observes that most certainly once belonging to a captain of the Doge's bodyguard and not Pisan. One-piece construction. Note: A very rare and seldom seen piece. It has the curious little point projecting from the top [this one is 3/4-inches long], as Stone's Glossary refers to it. Stone's Glossary also states, about the Cabasset; "The name is Italian and means pear, and the little point is supposed to represent the stem. Fig. 204."

Helmet comes with a binder of research related to the Minotaur and its symbolism and research; provided by the consignor.

Condition: Good for its age. Moderate wear overall, with patina, pitting and scattered marks. A few noticeable repairs and touch ups. Some faint separations to brim area. Etching has been cleaned, interior with hammer marks and textured.
