Description
German Imperial-Era Bergbau Spiked Helmet. Research has proved elusive on this interesting helmet. Some have suggested that it may be a police helmet for an unidentified small German town or village though it clearly displays the traditional German mining association symbol. In any case it appears original and to have been purposely made to this configuration. Constructed in an identical manner as an enlisted spiked helmet with leather body and visors, the front visor trimmed in polished steel. The 3 ½" tall polished-steel spike sits atop a round base secured with four round-head split-back retainers. Model 1891 lugs and leather chinstrap retaining a Reichs cockade on the right side, no cockade on the left side. The front plate features a Bergbau-style emblem beneath an Imperial crown. Each insignia is attached via threaded posts, washers and small, square nuts with no additional holes in the body. Nine-finger leather liner. No visible markings.Condition: Excellent condition exhibiting only modest wear including modest scattered scratches and scuffs. From the collection of J. T. Hamrick, M.D.
