Exceptional Etched and Gilded German, Augsburg Close Helmet.

Approximately 13-inches tall. The steel helmet of traditional form, with two-piece skull joined along the crest of a high, file roped medial comb and fitted at the nape with a plume-holder, visor, upper bevor and lower bevor attached to the skull by pivots fitted under the rounded heads with rosette-washers. Visor prop. Vision slits approximately 3-inches each. Pierced ventilation holes to the left [34] and rectangular ones to the right [14] along with a [7] extra pierced holes. Roped pattern borders to brim. Two gorget plates, front and rear, front lower lame with Augsburg stamp [pine cone]. Beautifully and richly decorated etching and gilding to overall, highlight this great piece. Hammer marks to interior. Possibly made for ceremonial purposes. C. 1610.

Condition: Good for its age, minor repairs. Moderate wear overall, with patina, pitting and scattered marks. Some losses and separations to steel. Etching has been cleaned a bit to bring out detail.; interior with hammer marks and texture.
