A Magnificent Etched and Gilded Burgonet.

Approximately 13 1/4-inches tall. The steel helmet of classic traditional form, with skull forged in one piece, containing all of its lining rivets and accompanying rosettes. File roped medial comb and fitted at the nape with a plume-holder. Pierced ventilation ear holes to the left [9] and right [9]. Roped pattern borders to brim. Beautifully and richly decorated etching and gilding to overall, highlight this great piece. Etched highlights including suits of armor, panoply's, chamfrons, grotesque characters and cross with INRI markings on both sides of the comb. Hammer marks to interior, c. 1560-1580. Large inventory tag marked 1157 hangs from leather strap. Note: Widely used through Europe from the 16th century on, mostly used by cavalry.

Condition: Good for its age, minor repairs. Moderate wear overall, with patina, pitting and scattered marks. Some losses and separations to steel. Etching has been cleaned a bit to bring out detail; interior with hammer marks and texture. A few loose rosettes and rivets. Please note: Gilding and blackening have evidence of being restored.
