Frank Dwight Baldwin: Two-Time MOH Winner Commissions and Papers. We are offering all the commissions of Frank Dwight Baldwin (1842-1923), the only soldier to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor in two different conflicts (Civil War and Indian Wars). He had a long and distinguished career and retired from active duty in 1906 and served as Adjutant General of Colorado 1917-1919. His wife, Alice, died one day after he did. They are buried together in Arlington National Cemetery. The commissions are housed in a 17" x 21" leather portfolio stamped on the cover: "Commissions, Discharges, Etc. General Frank D. Baldwin United States Army". The portfolio has some cracking to the spine and is somewhat delicate, but generally sound. The commissions date from the Civil War (Governor Austin Blair of Michigan) to the time of Woodrow Wilson. They have been holed at the top to facilitate lacing and ease of access. The highlights of the collection are two brevet promotions signed by Grover Cleveland. One cites him for "... gallant service in actions against Indians on the Salt Fork of the Red River, Texas, August 30, 1874, and on McClellan's Creek, Texas, November 8, 1874." The other, likewise issued on May 9,1894, cites him "... for a gallant and successful attack on Sitting Bull's camp of Indians, on Red Water River, Montana, December 18, 1876, and for conspicuous gallantry in action against Indians, at Wolf Mountain, Montana, January 8, 1877." An attached endorsement signed by Nelson Miles authorized a correction to the document from the original "Big Dry River" to the correct "Red Water River". Colonel Inspector General Department endorsed by Baldwin, 1892 Rutherford Hayes Military Order of the Loyal Legion, 1894 Grover Cleveland brevet Captain, 1894 Grover Cleveland brevet Major (both detailed above), 1898 William McKinley Major, 1898 William McKinley Inspector General of Volunteers, 1900 William McKinley Lieutenant Colonel, 1901 William McKinley Colonel of Infantry, 1901 Theodore Roosevelt Colonel of Infantry, 1902 Theodore Roosevelt Brigadier General, 1916 Woodrow Wilson Major General, 1917 Colorado Adjutant General signed by both the Governor and Baldwin, and 1917 Colorado Adjutant General's commission, unsigned. A large assortment of personal papers and military documents are included. An overview: 1894 Adjutant General's letter transmitting Baldwin's MOH for actions at McLellan's [sic] Creek, a Baldwin-signed form assuming command of Ft. Totten in 1887, a clerical copy of an 1877 Nelson Miles letter recommending Baldwin be brevetted Lieutenant Colonel for actions against Indians at Wolf Mountain, a sheaf of press-book copy letters on tissue paper from Ft. Totten, Dakota Territory, detailing maneuvers and practice drills and commenting on their importance (with three hand-drawn maps), various letters extending honorary club and society memberships, official Congressional bills and resolutions regarding Baldwin's military career, an 1888 form appointing Baldwin to sit on a court-martial proceeding at Fort Buford, Dakota, an 1880 passport signed by William Everts, a 1906 telegram and letter dealing with Baldwin's retirement from active service, transmittal forms that accompanied some of his commissions, plus more.Auction Info
