Confederate P.O.W. Camp: Johnson Island Artifacts.

Lot includes: 1) 5" x 7.75" letter written on the front of a single sheet, Johnson's Island, January 24, 1864, from "Striet" to his cousin, discussing life in the camp, being guarded by battlefield veterans from the Army of Virginia, the dim prospects of a prisoner exchange and his disappointment that his cousin's brother & son, also prisoners, had not been "among the 500 sent to Richmond". Tape repairs to two horizontal folds. 2) An "Abstract of Purchases" printed & manuscript form, detailing purchases of pork, beef & flour in the amount of $450 for members of the 171st Regiment Ohio National Guard (assigned Guard & Fatigue duty at Johnson's Island), twice-signed by Col. J. F. Aspen, Commander of the 171st Ohio, as well as Col. Charles W. Hill and Captain Nathan Ellmaker. 3) Modern "ladder" badge with names of four Johnson Island prisoners on gilt brass cross-bars, attached to a red & white ribbon. A binder of research material is included.
