Description
42-Star Garrison Flag Originally with 39 Stars. 196" x 100" [approximately 16' x 8'] wool flag with canvas hoist. The canton has a "Great Star" pattern with one large star within a five-pointed star. Nine stars appear to the left and twelve stars appear to the right. We believe this flag started out as a 39-star flag. Four stars were admitted to the Union in a nine-day period between November 2, 1889 and November 11, 1889. So, the flag maker had to move fast to keep up, adding the three extra stars in quick succession. There are three whipped grommets as well as five brass grommets. The stripes are machine stitched, while the stars (on both sides of the canton) are appliquéd. There are some light stains on the central star, a few minor rips in the bottom of the canton and a handful of small moth holes. The colors are vibrant. Given the age, the overall condition is outstanding.Auction Info
