Description
Collection of items related to Quartermaster Sergeant John P. Farmer (1842-1922) of Peterborough, New Hampshire. He enlisted into Company A, 1st Regiment New Hampshire Cavalry on March 23, 1864. He mustered out on July 15, 1865. During this period, the 1st N.H. fought at Cold Harbor, White Oak Swamp, Wilson's Raid on the Weldon Railroad and Ream's Station, in conjunction with Custer. They also succeeded in capturing the noted guerilla, Harry Gilmore of Maryland. The group includes artifacts as well as approximately one dozen war-related documents, plus family documents that pre-date the war. The war-related documents include a pass & forage receipt from 1865, a rather cynical "Soldier's Prayer" manuscript that mentions "Uncle Abe" and "Negroes", an 1863 letter with envelope from Farmer's father, two 1864 letters with envelopes from his father, a March 31st pass for Farmer and another teamster to pass from Darnestown, Maryland to Washington, a similar pass from 1865. a July 18, 1863 certification of residency document for the "Enroling Officer of the Town of Francestown", an 1864 recommendation for a furlough by a town official, a July 16, 1863 official document listing Farmer as "duly enrolled in Francestown 2nd District N.H.", an 1863 document exempting Farmer from being drafted by the state of Massachusetts, an 1863 document authorizing a furlough plus various odds-and-ends.
The artifacts include: a Lincoln CDV after an engraving, a "Piece of my Father's flag in War of 1861 also crepe worn by Soldiers for Lincoln", a writing pen with mother-of-pearl handle and a 2" fabric-covered pin-keep.
