Description

Illyrian Bronze Helmet, Eastern Europe c. 6th Century B.C.

Height is 8 1/4-inches [21 cm]. An elegant and well-preserved example of a bronze helmet from the Illyrian cultural sphere, dating to the 6th century B.C., originating from Eastern Europe, likely along the Adriatic coast. This distinctive form is characterized by its integral protective cheekpieces, a broadly flared neck guard, and prominent ridged decoration.

The crown features two raised longitudinal ridges, flanked by two horizontal reinforcing ribs above the brow, both stylistic and functional in nature. The lower edge is bordered with moulded detailing, finished with a series of small decorative bronze studs [few missing]. The cheekpieces are pierced at the tips, likely for securing a chin strap or lining. Another small but visible piercing on the brow. Helmet comes with Certificate of Authenticity from Artemission, Ref. 16.8729, detailing information about the helmet and its highlights, dated 18 April 2006.

Illyrian helmets represent one of the earliest and most recognizable forms of bronze protective headgear in the ancient world, influencing Greek and Etruscan styles. Typically cast in a single piece, they offered effective coverage with an open-face design and were widely used by Illyrian, Greek, and even early Roman warriors during the Archaic period.

Condition: Pleasing green patina overall, with subtle tonal variations from light to dark across the surface. The interior shows complementary patination with areas of natural cream-white mineral deposits, consistent with extended burial. A stable and well-preserved example with strong visual presence. Minor edge loss present. Helmet weighs just under 2 lbs.
