Description

Executioner's Sword.

Handsome edge weapon measuring 35 1/2-inches overall. Makers mark on ricasso. 28-inch blade marked with what appears to read STA MARIA ORA PRO NOBIS and DIRUM SCELUS NON [some missing letters] obverse. It comes across as in reference to the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Hail Mary [some of the engraved letters are illegible, we made our best effort to translate properly]. Blade is [1 7/8-inch at widest]. 7 1/2-inch straight bar crossguard with two round ends. Ovoid pommel cap with button. Handle with finger grooves, fitted with wrought brass end caps. Round brass tag accompanying the sword marked; 26 on one side and 204588 other side, probably a museum or collection inventory related. Weighs approximately 3.4 lbs. Circa 1600.

Condition: Very good to fine. Finish primarily a smooth grey age patina with noticeable age wear and minor pitting. Edge sharpened. Handle missing wrap.
