Description
Chain Mail Shirt, Likely 17th Century. If longevity of a design can attest to its efficacy, then chain mail (known simply as "mail" to those who wore in history) is a very successful design: from 3rd century BC to modern divers, chain mail has been excellent protection. This piece is a wonderful example of a renaissance mail shirt. Approximately 36-inches in chest size, with 13 inch sleeves and two skirts that would protect the thighs, it presents wonderfully on its half pedestal bust. The chain mail is of the 4-in-1 style of linkage, where each ring passes through four others, and the original links are of a finely done rivet style of construction, that was then finished down to appear like a solid ring. There are period repairs done with rougher riveted links and one that may be a maker's mark, and some missing links as well. The leather collar is not contemporary to its creation, done later by a previous collector. This is an excellent example of mail armor, and would be a great centerpiece in any collection of militaria.
Condition: Very good, showing age wear and dark patina. Some repairs noted; some missing rings. Aftermarket brass rings present on left skirt possibly added for display mounting. Pedestal, with handling wear. From the Sylver Schaller Collection.
