U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag Bolt Action Rifle Converted to 1899 Carbine.
Serial no. 173481. .30-40 Krag. 24-inch un-crowned barrel (cut 2-inches longer than the standard 22-inch length) with fixed front sight and Model 1902 rear sight. Metal parts blued; receiver casehardened. Left side of receiver marked "U.S. / MODEL 1898 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 173481". Walnut stock and hand guard. Stock with circle "P" firing proof and "JLA / 1899" inspector's cartouche. Metal buttplate with trap door for cleaning rod.

Condition: Very good. Bluing worn to a pleasing smooth gray patina with traces of case color on the receiver. The stock is excellent displaying only minimal wear. The left side of the hand guard has a small 2-inch crack near the receiver. Bright bore with some light pitting. Mechanically sound.
