Description

Sowers & Smith Half Stock Plains Percussion Rifle. Approximately .40 caliber, 37-inch heavy octagonal barrel with brass blade front sight and buckhorn style rear sight. Lock with modest engraving and marked SOWERS & SMITH. Set trigger. Brass curved buttplate, trigger guard, side plate, and ramrod ferrules. Walnut stock with pewter fore-end cap. Sowers & Smith were listed in an 1855 Philadelphia director as importers.
Condition: Very good. Metal exhibits a plum brown patina with scattered light pits, scratches and wear at the high spots. Powder pitting at the breech. Stock with a small crack just forward of the lock and with additional modest wear. Mechanically sound.
