William Pratt Breech-Loading Carbine and Ledger Book. Comprising: 1) Pratt Rotating Breech Percussion Carbine. Unserialized. Approximately .69 caliber, 18-inch round barrel with smooth bore. Flip up rear sight. Breech fitted with rotating lever which contains nipple and facilitates breech loading. Lock marked: PHILA. Back lock marked: W. Pratt/Balto/1855. Front barrel band. Iron triggerguard with integral sling swivel. Smooth walnut stock with flat steel buttplate. Left side of stock with inspector's cartouche: LJ. 2) Business card of William Pratt which lists him as an engineer with a specialty in drawings and patents with the statement Incomplete Inventions Perfected. 2 1/4-inches by 3 3/4-inches. 3) Leather bound ledger book of notes and drawings. Approximately 300 pages. 8-inches x 10 1/2-inches. Included are magnificent and detailed drawings of pre-Civil War era breechloading carbines and rifles including Merrill, Ballard and Gibbs as well as notes, drawings and articles on numerous other subjects including "safety lamp & feeder" and a beer recipe. Much of the contents are hand-written notes. All of it is alphabetized.
Condition: 1) Good to very good with moderate age wear and smooth patina. Dents to wood. Action functions. 2) Fine. 3) Good. Binding loose. Pages lightly soiled. Contents excellent.
