Description
U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle.Serial no. 29705 (barrel and receiver), .50 caliber, 32 ½-inch barrel with brass blade front sight. Top of breech marked: 1870[eagle over arrows]/U.S. Lock marked: 1863/[eagle]/U.S./SPRINGFIELD. Long range ladder rear sight. Varnished walnut stock with two barrel bands and curved steel buttplate marked: US. Original inspector mark ESA in an oval cartouche appears near the lock screw and again above the trigger.
Condition: Good. Steel is now a smooth mottled gray-brown patina. Front sight has been altered, bayonet lug absent. Cleaning rod absent. Stock has been varnished but is otherwise very good with light dents and one small hole under the wrist. Small chips in stock at back of lock. Sling swivels are absent. Bore is good with light pitting.
