Sharps New Model 1859 Military Percussion Rifle.

Serial no. 40966, .52 percussion caliber, 30-inch barrel with fixed front sight, bayonet lug and folding rear ladder sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Top of barrel marked: SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN. and NEW MODEL 1859. R.S. Lawrence and C. Sharps patent dates to right side of receiver. Smooth walnut straight stock and fore-end. Three barrel bands and two sling swivels. Hinged metal patchbox to right side of stock. Carbine buttplate.
Note: Approximately 4,300 of these 1859 rifles were contracted to the government (1,500 Army and 2,800 Navy).

Condition: Fine. Retaining 40-50% of a thin blue finish with scattered handling wear and fine patches of pitting. Vibrant case colors remaining. Dings and scuffs present to wood. Action crisp. Bright bore.
